- The primary objective is achieving the fastest possible short-term restoration results rather than establishing long-term landscape function
- Unclear land tenure prevents community stewardship
- Industrial-scale restoration is required without local production objectives
The method should therefore be applied selectively. Its value depends on addressing landscapes where its integrated approach creates benefits beyond what simpler interventions can achieve.
Selecting Landscapes for Transformation
The central question is whether a landscape has the conditions required for restoration to become durable transformation.
Questions such as how many hectares can be restored, how quickly implementation can proceed, or how many trees can be planted become meaningful only after that first question has been answered.
Sahelian bocage creates the greatest value where ecological recovery and human productivity are interconnected. Restoring water cycles, soils, vegetation, and biodiversity strengthens the productive capacity of the landscape while supporting the communities that depend upon it.
